Gum Recontouring

Your Gums Recontoured
For A Balanced Smile

A scientifically beautiful smile requires a well-balanced ratio of teeth and gum display. If your smile shows more gum than teeth, this is what we call a ‘gummy smile.’ A gummy smile essentially draws attention to your gums, rather than your teeth, which can make teeth appear smaller or unfinished.

At Orchard Scotts Dental, we emphasize proper diagnosis of the ‘gummy’ smile problem and offer the appropriate treatment options which include Laser Gum Recontouring as well as Botox.

What is considered a
Gummy Smile?

The perfect smile is one where gums aren’t visible at all and only the upper incisors can be seen. Even the lower front teeth should only be minimally visible when you smile. A gummy smile, on the other hand, shows more than 2 mm of upper gum – anything less is usually considered normal.

Here are several reasons why your gums might have become longer and more prominent than the teeth:

Short teeth or excessively thick gum tissue
Hyper-mobile lips or short lips
Long protruding upper jaw bone
A combination
of any of the above reasons

why fix a
gummy smile?

“Gummy” smiles can often make people feel embarrassed. They try to hide their gums when they smile and talk and sometimes this may affect social confidence. The beauty of a smile is not only made up of teeth, but also the framing of the teeth including gums and lips.

Treatment Options

01

Laser Gum Recontouring

Your smile is improved by using dental laser to remove excess gum tissue that is making the teeth appear short. Digital Gum Contouring may be used to visually plan for the right proportion of excess gum to reduce.

02

Botox

Botulinum Toxin can be used to address some of the cases when the gummy smile is not caused by short teeth. With botulinum toxin, a nice smile can be achieved by controlling the amount of gum shown.

03

Gum Lift with Porcelain Veneers

Improve the proportions of your smile by correcting the amount of gum shown in contrast to teeth. Porcelain veneers can be done in conjunction to improve shape, colour and minor misalignment of teeth.
